Updated English O Level 2023 Syllabus Changes: All You Need to Know

Many parents and students have been asking us about the changes to the new O Level English syllabus. These changes will affect students from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 who will be taking the O Level English exams from 2023).

We know everything seems very confusing. So we have broken it down here for you.

There are two main changes to the English paper:

1.Oral Communication (Paper 4)

  • Part 1: Reading Aloud (10 marks)

    —> Students read aloud short text

    Part 2: Spoke Interaction (20 marks)

    —> Students engage in a discussion with examiners based on a video clip

  • Part 1: Planned Response (15 marks)

    —> Students plan and deliver a response to a video clip and given question prompt

    —> Response should be up to 2 minutes

    —> Students are given 10 minutes of preparation time

    Part 2: Spoken Interaction (15 marks)

    —> Students engage in a discussion with examiners on topic based on same video clip

  • —> A variety of speaking practices incorporated into our weekly lessons

    —> Activities include responding to short videos, learning to organise responses, having class discussions

    —> Students will discuss current affairs and other important topics on general knowledge so they have exposure to a range of topics

2.Visual Text Comprehension (Paper 2 Section A)

  • —> 5 marks

    —> Students respond to questions based on ONE visual text

  • —> 5 marks

    —> Students respond to questions based on TWO texts

    —> One text is a visual text

    —> Questions that ask students to compare both texts are included

  • —> Incorporating two texts in all our visual text practices

    —> The texts will include a range of visual texts

    —> Students get to practice a variety of questions, including comparative questions, incorporated into our lessons
